This class is a history of post-WWII twentieth century world history. The course focuses on themes related to the cold war rivalry between the USA and USSR, Decolonization in Africa and Asia, protracted (and prolonged) conflicts in the Middle East, the Fall of Communism in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, whether the United NAtions has been a success or failure, as well as the rise of new powers China and India. Additionally, students will learn how nationalism, revolution, war and genocide have shaped the twentieth century time and again. Students will also have an appreciation for the human rights revolution of the era in the West (in particular) through the study of civil rights, feminist movements and gender equality. The class will encourage discussion and the development of research and writing skills. Finally, students will learn to assess, analyze and formulate informed ideas about and of their world.
